As I've mentioned in other places on this site, VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol seems to be the next big thing in the telecommunication market. Many new users are tech savvy students, engineers, small businesses, homemakers and the list goes on and on. As this technology continues to emerge, no doubt the masses will follow. As with similar new high tech products, the first adopters are usually ones who stay abreast of new developments in the technology.

So, what about the equipment? The equipment that you use to connect to voip varies between services. Some providers will allow you to connect a traditional telephone to your computer allowing conversion of the analog signal to digital data. There are also phones that are specially made for use with voip services. Nokia and Motorola New hybrid phones are just a couple of examples that are under development that use the best of both worlds. Imagine making a call on a cell phone that can automatically switch to a free WiFi network when you're in a WiFi hotspot. These new products are under development right now and will obviously make voip communications even more convenient in the near future. So, while we have a lot of choice in front of us right now to make cheap phone calls, the future seems to hold even more choices.

Only recently have some of the major cable internet services started to offer voip plan as part of their packages. As Verizon is the holder of several patents related to voip technology, only time will tell the results of it's ongoing patent infringement lawsuits and how they affect the industry.
